The Experience

You hear the water before you see it—Babinda Boulders is all mossy rocks and that sound of tumbling mountain water. Our guide, Matt (who grew up nearby), pointed out some tiny orchids clinging to the trees. I didn’t expect the air to smell so clean—like wet stone and eucalyptus. We had time for a quick swim; I dipped my feet in and instantly regretted not bringing a towel. The water’s cold but in that way that wakes you up, you know?

Driving through Innisfail was like rolling back a few decades—art deco buildings, faded shop signs, sugar cane fields stretching out forever. Then Etty Bay: we actually saw a cassowary just wandering along the sand like it owned the place. Matt handed out tea and these crumbly biscuits while telling us about cassowary myths (I tried to pronounce “Gunduy”—Li laughed when I butchered it). The bird barely glanced at us, just kept pecking around the driftwood.

Paronella Park itself feels almost unreal at first—ferns everywhere, old stone bridges tangled with vines, waterfalls catching late afternoon light.
