The experience

The day begins at 8 a.m. with pickup from your Cairns hotel and the drive to Paronella Park, Queensland's first and only castle. Built in the 1930s by José Paronella, the park sits on 5 hectares of tropical gardens, waterfalls, and historical ruins. A 45-minute guided storytelling tour walks you through the highlights: the restored hydroelectric generator, the architecture itself, and the history behind one man's vision. The park has wildlife and fish feeding stations, so there's time to linger if you want to photograph the grounds or sit in the café.

From there, the group travels to Historic Village Herberton, an open-air museum spread across 16 acres. More than 50 restored buildings recreate a tin-mining town from the turn of the century: shops, banks, pubs, a chemist, a garage, a printer. The collection inside them (grocery items, tobacco, dolls, toys, war memorabilia, period machinery and transport) tells the story of Australia's pioneering past and Herberton's boom when tin mining dominated the Atherton Tablelands. You walk through at your own pace, so you can spend time in the buildings that interest you most.

The final stop is Granite Gorge Nature Park, where you hand-feed a wild colony of Mareeba Rock Wallabies. These rare creatures were first identified as a new species at the Gorge in 1996. The setting is picturesque, and the wallabies are accustomed to visitors, so the feeding is straightforward and relaxed. The tour wraps up in the late afternoon, and you're returned to your Cairns hotel.
