The Experience

The day starts with a scenic drive north along the Great Barrier Reef coastline toward Port Douglas. Your guide takes you through the main street, up to Flagstaff Hill for a view over 4 Mile Beach, and past the chapel and marine precinct before heading to the Daintree River. Morning tea and home-cooked refreshments wait at the river before you board the 11am cruise—a full hour on the water watching for crocodiles basking on the banks, fish activity, birdlife, cassowaries and water dragons. Your guide gives running commentary on the behaviour and ecology of what you see.

After the cruise, a tour of Daintree Village leads to the Daintree Tea House for lunch. The menu is restaurant-style Australian cuisine with options for dietary requirements. Then you head to Mossman Gorge Cultural Centre, where a shuttle bus takes you into the gorge itself. Your guide gives a full induction into the region's history and the knowledge of the local people, then walks the boardwalks of the lower gorge—fully accessible for all ages and abilities—pointing out specific plants, seeds and bush tucker that sustain the rainforest. If you want to go deeper, your guide can take you into the upper regions on a medium-level trek through older sections of the forest. A swim in the gorge is an option if you choose it.

On the return toward Cairns, the tour stops at Rex's Lookout overlooking the coral sea and the coastline against the mountains—a spot where paragliders often launch on clear days. The group stays under 11 passengers throughout, and an air-conditioned vehicle handles the drive between stops.
