The Experience

“Wait, is that our first clue?” I whispered, squinting at the old clock above Flinders Street Station. My friend laughed — apparently I was taking this vampire thing a bit too seriously. But honestly, the city felt different after dark, like every shadow might hide something. Our phones buzzed with the next riddle and suddenly we were off, weaving through crowds and tram bells, Grimalkin (well, my phone background cat) in tow. Hosier Lane smelled like spray paint and rain from earlier. We stood there longer than we meant to, trying to crack a puzzle about gargoyles while a couple of teenagers watched us like we were part of the street art. Sometimes we’d pause just to look up at the buildings — all those gothic arches and flickering lights made it easy to believe in old secrets. At Ridgway Place, I tried reading a clue out loud and butchered the pronunciation; someone passing by grinned at my attempt.
