The experience
“You know this used to be a red-light district, right?” our guide Tom grinned as we ducked into a narrow alley off Federation Square. I’d barely finished my first sip of the local gin when he launched into tales about Melbourne’s booziest police commissioner: honestly, I thought he was joking until he pointed out the old men’s club tucked behind graffiti-splashed walls. The air smelled like rain on concrete and something sweet from a bakery nearby. It was only 5pm but already felt like we’d peeled back half the city’s secrets.
We wandered through laneways that looked like someone had let loose with spray cans in every color imaginable. At one point I got distracted by a mural of a blue-faced woman: almost missed the group turning into another bar, which you’d never spot if you weren’t looking for it. Inside was dim and cozy, all mismatched chairs and laughter echoing off brick walls. Tom handed us a trivia card at the second stop (“winner gets bragging rights, or maybe another drink”), and I surprised myself by actually knowing who founded Victoria (gold rush, apparently). The city’s history just sort of seeps up between the cracks here.
