The Experience

The tour leaves Darwin and heads straight into Corroboree Billabong for a wildlife cruise where crocodiles and birdlife move through their natural habitat. A picnic lunch follows near the East Alligator River—another spot where crocs surface—before the 4WD pushes north to Ubirr. The rock art here ranks among the best examples in northern Australia, and your guide walks you through the paintings and their Dreamtime stories. A climb to the top opens into a 360-degree view across the Nardab floodplains and into Arnhem Land. You sleep at Mardugal Billabong safari camp, a permanent tent with bed and sheets, screened communal areas for meals, and hot showers.

Day two is built around water and stone. A 1 km walk through a gorge lined with 200-meter sandstone cliffs leads to Jim Jim Falls and its plunge pool—a swim that lands hard after the drive. (If Jim Jim is closed, the route shifts to Motor Car Falls and the Yurmikmik region instead.) After lunch, you move to Burrungkuy (Nourlangie Rock) to learn how the traditional owners read the land through rock art and Dreamtime. A hike up Gunwhardewharde Lookout delivers views across the woodlands toward the Arnhem Land escarpment. Another night at camp.

The final day takes you through a paperbark forest to Maguk (Barramundi Gorge), where a 1 km hike with some rock scrambling reaches another plunge pool. From there, the 4WD heads south to Gunlom Falls—the tour's last swim, this time in naturally formed infinity pools at the top with panoramic views of southern Kakadu spread below. The drive back to Darwin passes through the historic town of Pine Creek and arrives around 5:30 pm.
