The Experience

Someone’s passing around mugs of instant coffee, still half-asleep, when our guide Dan points out the first magpie geese drifting over the Mary River wetlands. The air smells like eucalyptus and campfire smoke. I’m not really a morning person, but there’s something about watching that mist burn off the billabong that makes you forget how early it is. We pile into the 4WD and head for the Corroboree Billabong cruise — I’m half-expecting to see nothing but reeds, but suddenly there’s a crocodile gliding just below the surface. Dan grins and says, “That one’s been here longer than I have.”

Later, at Ubirr, we’re scrambling up sun-warmed rocks to see Aboriginal rock art that’s thousands of years old. Our group falls quiet — you can almost feel the stories in the ochre lines. The sunset over Nadab Floodplain is ridiculous (in a good way), all gold light and endless sky. Dinner back at camp is a bit chaotic — everyone chopping veggies or trying to get the gas stove going while someone else tells a joke about drop bears. I end up sharing a tent with a woman from Melbourne who snores like a freight train but laughs even louder.

The next day is all about waterfalls — Maguk if you’re lucky with water levels, or sometimes Jim Jim Falls if you’re up for the hike (bring shoes you don’t mind getting muddy). Swimming in those plunge pools feels like hitting reset on your brain; cold shock then pure calm. There’s always someone who hesitates at first (me), but Dan just wades in and says it’ll wake us up better than coffee. At Nourlangie Rock we catch our breath — literally, because it’s steep — and listen as he talks about how these paintings survived more than 20,000 years of storms and sun.

Litchfield comes last: termite mounds like alien sculptures, Florence Falls pouring into clear water where kids splash around locals on weekend escape. By now everyone’s sunburned and slightly feral in the best way. The drive back to Darwin is mostly quiet except for someone humming along to an old Midnight Oil song on the radio. I keep thinking about that first swim under the cliffs — still can’t believe places like this are real.
