The experience

The tour picks you up from your Darwin accommodation and heads straight into Kakadu's Burrungkuy region, stopping first at the South Alligator River to watch for saltwater crocodiles and birdlife. The Burrungkuy Rock Art Site holds ancient Aboriginal galleries, and from Nawurlandja Lookout the floodplains stretch to the horizon. The Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre fills in the stories behind what you see, and the day ends on a Yellow Water Sunset Cruise, gliding past wetland birds as the light turns orange and pink.

Day two moves north to Ubirr, another major rock art site where the multi-level shelters hold thousands of years of creation stories and daily life painted into the rock. Nadab Lookout opens onto views across the floodplains toward Arnhem Land. The Guluyambi Cultural Cruise on the East Alligator River is led by a local Aboriginal guide who shares cultural insights and traditional stories. The cruise also crosses into Arnhem Land and stops at Cahills Crossing. You'll see the Marrawuddi Art Gallery in Jabiru Township before returning to camp. Day three takes you south to Maguk (Barramundi Gorge), where a short walk through monsoon forest leads to a swimming hole ringed by cliffs. Ikoymarrwa (Moline Rockhole) offers a quieter stop, and Pine Creek Township breaks up the drive before you settle at Gorge View or Nitmiluk Campground.

Nitmiluk National Park arrives on day four with an early boarding on the Nit Nit Dreaming Cruise through Katherine Gorge, where sandstone cliffs rise from the water and a guide explains the Jawoyn Dreamtime stories woven into the landscape. Katherine Hot Springs provides a soak in natural thermal pools, and Leliyn (Edith Falls) offers swimming in clear pools beneath cascading water. The night is spent at Mount Bundy Station, a working cattle station. The final day covers Litchfield National Park: the Magnetic and Cathedral Termite Mounds, Florence Falls for a swim under the waterfall, Buley Rockhole's series of rock pools, and Wangi Falls' plunge pool and viewing platform. You return to Darwin accommodation by late afternoon.
