The experience
The tour leaves Darwin early and heads to Florence Falls first, where you walk down 160 steps to a plunge pool below the double waterfall. From there the guide takes you to Tolmer Falls, home to rare ghost and orange horseshoe bats that roost in the cliff face, then to Wangi Falls: the most accessible of the day's swimming holes. Between swims you stop at the Magnetic Termite Mounds, where local termites have built structures that stand upright like compasses, and finish at Howard Springs Nature Park to watch for turtles, barramundi and freshwater fish in the water.
An air-conditioned vehicle carries the group between sites, and a live guide provides commentary on the plants, wildlife and geology as you travel. The Northern Territory Parks Pass is included in the tour price, so there's no separate entry fee to buy. You'll need a medium level of fitness for the walk down to Florence Falls (the 160 steps back up are the steepest part of the day), but the other swims and walks are gentler. Swimming is seasonal and controlled by NT Parks, so water access depends on conditions when you visit. The tour returns to Darwin around 5:15pm.
Bring sun protection, insect repellent, a water bottle, swimwear and a towel. A packed lunch is provided. If you're traveling with an infant in a stroller, contact the supplier at least 72 hours before departure to confirm they can accommodate it. During the wet season, the itinerary may shift slightly depending on water levels and park conditions.
