The experience
The tour leaves Darwin on the Stuart Highway, heading toward the Adelaide River through mango-farming country. As you travel down the Arnhem Highway, you'll pass the Window on the Wetlands: a panoramic lookout over the Marrakai wetlands, home to over 117 reptile species and 280 bird species. The lookout stays in view as the bus rolls past. You don't stop there, but the sight frames what's coming.
At 9am you board the crocodile cruise vessel, a custom-built boat designed to bring you close to saltwater crocodiles in the Adelaide River. The guides are local and experienced. They talk through crocodile behavior, habitat and survival strategy as the boat moves through the water. Safety is built into the design. The vessel itself is what makes the proximity possible without the risk. The cruise runs for one hour.
After the boat returns, the tour stops at the Humpty Doo Hotel, a local spot where you can order a drink and sit with the vibe of the Top End. Then it's the drive back to Darwin, arriving around lunchtime. The whole outing (transfers, commentary, the cruise itself) takes about four and a half hours from pickup to drop-off in central Darwin.
