The experience
The morning starts in Darwin itself. Your guide drives past St Mary's Star of the Sea Cathedral and other city landmarks, then stops at Charles Darwin National Park for views across the harbor. The Darwin Aviation Museum holds 19 aircraft, including a B-52 Bomber on permanent loan from the United States Air Force, plus rare footage of the first air-raid on Darwin from both Australian and Japanese archives. After that comes the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, which houses the largest permanent display of Aboriginal artwork in Australia alongside visual arts and Northern Territory natural sciences collections.
The George Brown Botanic Gardens sit on grounds where marine and estuarine plants grow naturally: one of only a few such gardens in the world. You'll walk through and spot local wildlife among the exotic species. Before the midday break, the Wetland View Top Centre offers views across the floodplains with interactive displays explaining the ecological processes of the wetlands. In the green season, lightning storms often accompany the views. After a 45-minute pause in the city for lunch, the tour heads inland to the Adelaide River, home to over 1,600 saltwater crocodiles. Your wildlife guide entices them to leap from the water for buffalo meat while explaining their biology, territorial habits and ecological role, and you'll see an array of native birdlife along the riverbank.
The tour runs nine hours total and returns by 5:30 pm. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included from selected Darwin hotels. If your hotel isn't listed, contact the supplier to arrange an alternative. The coach is air-conditioned, and the group stays small. Lunch is on your own during the city break.
