The Experience

You're picked up from your Hervey Bay accommodation early enough that the island still feels quiet. The barge crossing to Fraser Island takes about an hour — time to settle in, grab a coffee, and watch the water change color as you leave the mainland behind. Your guide runs through the day ahead: Lake McKenzie first, then the rainforest, 75 Mile Beach, Eli Creek, and the Maheno Shipwreck. Lake McKenzie hits different when you're standing at the edge of it.
