The experience

You're picked up from your Hervey Bay accommodation early enough that the island still feels quiet. The barge crossing to Fraser Island takes about an hour: time to settle in, grab a coffee, and watch the water change color as you leave the mainland behind. Your guide runs through the day ahead: Lake McKenzie first, then the rainforest, 75 Mile Beach, Eli Creek, and the Maheno Shipwreck. It's a lot, but the group stays under 20 people, which means the vehicle moves at a pace that actually lets you see things instead of just passing through.

Lake McKenzie hits different when you're standing at the edge of it. The water is so clear and the sand so white that it looks almost unreal. The kind of place you'd think was photoshopped if you hadn't just waded into it yourself. You get time to swim, and the freshwater is warm enough that you don't want to get out. After that, the Central Station Rainforest walk takes you through towering Kari Pines and staghorn ferns so big they seem to belong in another era. The creek runs invisible beneath the ferns, which your guide points out. It's the kind of detail that makes you realize how much you'd miss if you were driving solo.

75 Mile Beach is exactly what the name says: a sand highway that stretches until it disappears. The vehicle drives right on it, which feels strange and brilliant at the same time. Then Eli Creek (the largest freshwater creek on the eastern side of the island), where you can cool off again in water so clear you can see the white silica sand beneath your feet. The Maheno Shipwreck, wrecked here in 1935, sits rusting on the beach like something from another world. It's been here long enough that it feels like it's always been part of the island, and your guide tells you the story without making it feel like a speech.

Lunch is included, and you're back in Hervey Bay by 6:00pm. Early enough to actually do something with the evening instead of collapsing into dinner.
