The Experience
The ferry leaves River Heads in the morning, and within an hour you're stepping onto K'gari for the first time. Kingfisher Bay Resort sits on the western bay side, and that's where your first night lands you — a chance to settle in, swim in one of the lagoon pools, or catch the sunset from the bar before the real exploring starts. The resort has three restaurants and four bars, so you're not roughing it; the point is to arrive rested and ready.
Day two and three are the heart of it. You'll have an expert local guide driving a 4WD coach through the island's interior and along 75 Mile Beach, the sandy highway that runs the spine of Fraser Island. Lake McKenzie comes first — that's the perched dune lake with water so clear and blue it looks unreal, and you'll swim in it. Then Central Station Rainforest, where a former logging hub sits quiet now and the boardwalks run alongside Wangoolba Creek. Lake Wabby is a 4km walk across soft sand and bushland (moderate fitness needed), but the emerald-green water at the end makes it worth it. The second night you stay at K'gari Beach Resort on 75 Mile Beach itself, so you're right on the east coast. On day three, the itinerary shifts with the tides, but you'll see the Maheno Shipwreck — a passenger liner that washed ashore in 1935 — and Indian Head, where turtles and rays move through the water below the rocky headland. The Pinnacles Coloured Sands show off the rainbow cliffs, and there's a natural rock pool where the ocean crashes in like a jacuzzi.
Days four and five are yours to move slowly. Back at Kingfisher Bay Resort, you can use the pools, visit the Discovery Centre, book optional activities like ranger-led walks or a sunset cruise, or simply sit. The resort handles the logistics — your room, your meals, your ferry back to River Heads on day five. Checkout is 10am, and the final ferry leaves at 5pm, so you have the morning to yourself before heading back to the mainland.
