The experience

The briefing at Freedom Hostel starts at 7 am, and that's when you meet the people you'll spend the next two days with. The guide runs through safety on Fraser Island's beach highway, shows you how the 4WD handles sand, and sorts everyone into vehicles. By 8:30 am you're heading to the barge at Rainbow Beach, a 10-minute drive, and then it's 15 minutes across the water before you're actually on K'gari, the world's largest sand island. The eastern beach stretches north in front of you, and you're driving it yourself, following the lead vehicle. Speed limits are posted. The sand is firm.
