The first thing I noticed was the crunch of sand under our boots—so fine it squeaked. We’d barely left Rainbow Beach when our guide, Dave (sunburned nose, easy laugh), pointed out the 75 Mile Beach stretching ahead like some wild highway. The 4WD rumbled over ridges that made my teeth chatter. At one point, a dingo loped along the water’s edge and everyone went quiet for a second—just waves and wind and this animal watching us back.

Eli Creek was colder than I expected. I waded in up to my knees and felt the current tugging at my ankles—clear water sliding over sand that looked almost white in the sunlight. Some kids floated by on inflatable rings, shrieking every time they hit a shallow spot. Dave told us about the freshwater here, how it filters through K’gari’s sand for decades before reaching the sea. He made it sound like magic, honestly.

Standing by the Maheno Shipwreck, I tried to imagine what it was like when it first washed up—now it’s all rust and barnacles, but there’s something weirdly beautiful about it. Someone asked if we could climb on top (nope). The salt air tasted sharp on my lips. Lunch happened somewhere near there—I can’t remember exactly where because I was too busy wolfing down my sandwich and staring at that old ship.

Lake McKenzie is unreal. The water is so clear you can see your toes even when you’re waist-deep. Silica sand gets everywhere (I’m still finding it in my shoes). We swam until our fingers pruned up, then lay on towels listening to distant kookaburras laughing in the bush. Central Station Rainforest was last—towering trees and soft green light filtering down while Dave explained how this place used to be a logging camp. It felt peaceful now, just footsteps and bird calls echoing around us.
