The first thing I noticed when we walked into the tasting room was the faint scent of oak barrels and something almost citrusy—maybe from the Rieslings lined up on the counter. Our host, Anna, greeted us with a glass of The Nancy Sparkling Pinot Noir. It’s got this lively fizz that wakes up your palate right away. She mentioned it’s named after Jim Barry’s wife, which felt like a nice personal touch.
We tried a whole lineup—some I’d heard of, others totally new to me. The Assyrtiko stood out; it’s not a grape you expect to find in South Australia, but it worked. Anna shared stories about each vineyard—turns out the St Clare Cabernet Malbec comes from vines planted back in the ‘70s.
By the time we reached the reds—the Pb Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon and The Benbournie Cabernet—I could hear magpies outside and caught a whiff of eucalyptus drifting in through an open window. The McRae Wood Shiraz wrapped things up with these deep berry flavors that lingered long after the last sip.
