The Experience

You're picked up from your accommodation in a private Mercedes-Benz V-Class, which means the whole day stays yours — no other groups, no shared tastings, no schedule built around anyone else's pace. The drive takes you along Coonawarra's famous terra rossa strip, the distinctive red soil that defines the region's winemaking. Your guide handles the route and the timing, so you move between five cellar doors without navigating or planning stops.

Parker Estate opens the tastings: a premium winery on those terra rossa soils, celebrated for its Cabernet Sauvignon and the award-winning First Growth. You'll taste their wines at the cellar door and talk directly with the winemakers about what makes them distinctive. A newly renovated cellar door follows, with sparkling, white and red wines to sample. Then comes Wynns Coonawarra Estate, the district's longest-established producer, where winemaker Sue Hodder's reds — the John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon and Michael Shiraz — anchor the region's reputation. Raidis rounds out the tastings with a relaxed session and the chance for Greek coffee from the family's head, Chris Raidis.

Lunch happens at Ottelia, a seasonal kitchen serving wood-fired pizzas, fresh vegetable dishes and a set menu of small plates — drinks are your own cost. If Ottelia is closed (Tuesdays and Wednesdays), the operator substitutes another suitable venue. After lunch, you walk Petticoat Lane, a hidden corner of Penola lined with original 19th-century cottages and working herb and vegetable gardens. The day ends with a drive through Coonawarra town and a photo at the iconic railway siding under the Coonawarra sign.

Top questions

What makes Parker Estate worth visiting on a Coonawarra wine tour?

Parker Estate, established in 1985, sits on the region's distinctive terra rossa soils and is celebrated for its Cabernet Sauvignon, especially the award-winning First Growth. The winery offers tastings at the cellar door and direct conversation with winemakers about their wines.

How many cellar doors do you visit on this private tour?

You visit up to five cellar doors across the day: Parker Estate, a newly renovated cellar door with sparkling and still wines, Wynns Coonawarra Estate, Raidis, and one additional stop, depending on the itinerary on the day.

What is Petticoat Lane and why is it included in the tour?

Petticoat Lane is a hidden corner of Penola lined with original 19th-century cottages and gardens, letting you step into the region's history. The working herb and vegetable garden there is open to visitors for a small coin donation, and it breaks up the day between tastings and lunch.

Is lunch included, and what if I have dietary preferences?

Lunch is included at Ottelia, a seasonal kitchen serving wood-fired pizzas and fresh vegetable dishes from its kitchen garden, with a set menu of small plates. Drinks with lunch are at your own cost. If Ottelia is closed (Tuesdays and Wednesdays), the operator books an alternative venue.

What's the difference between this tour and a shared group wine tour?

This is a private tour in a Mercedes-Benz V-Class, so your group has all five cellar door tastings to yourselves with no other visitors sharing the experience. The guide adjusts the pace and timing to suit your group alone.

Are there any restrictions on who can book this tour?

The tour is for ages 18 and over only; children are not accommodated. The tour runs 6.5 hours and is suitable for all fitness levels. Pickup is included from your accommodation; if you're staying in Mount Gambier or Naracoorte regions, pickup is not available.
