Then comes Wynns Coonawarra Estate, the district's longest-established producer, where winemaker Sue Hodder's reds — the John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon and Michael Shiraz — anchor the region's reputation. Raidis rounds out the tastings with a relaxed session and the chance for Greek coffee from the family's head, Chris Raidis.

If Ottelia is closed (Tuesdays and Wednesdays), the operator substitutes another suitable venue. After lunch, you walk Petticoat Lane, a hidden corner of Penola lined with original 19th-century cottages and working herb and vegetable gardens.
