The Experience

I’ll be honest — I nearly spilled my coffee at Calmsley Hill Farm when a wombat shuffled right up to my shoes. Our guide, Mark, just grinned and handed me another scone (still warm, smelled faintly of eucalyptus). He knew every animal by name — I think the kangaroos did too. I tried to get a photo with the emu but it turned out blurry; those birds move fast. The morning felt like visiting an old friend’s backyard, except their pets are all Australian icons.

The drive west out of Sydney was quiet, just the low hum of the road and Mark pointing out bits of local history I’d never heard — something about bushrangers near Penrith? Anyway, as we climbed into the Blue Mountains, the air changed. Cooler, sharper. We pulled up at this lookout only small groups could reach (Mark called it his “secret spot”). The view just opened up — layers of blue-green ridges and that weird silence you only get in big open places. I tried to take it in but honestly, it’s one of those things you feel more than see.
