The experience
Eight hours gives you time to move through the valley without rushing. The tour picks you up at Port Adelaide Outer Harbour and heads into Adelaide Hills before reaching Barossa Valley proper. You'll taste at established family wineries: Kersbrook Hill Wines & Cider, a boutique operation with over 35 wines and traditional ciders; Chateau Dorrien in Tanunda, known for fortified wines and meads; Kies Family Wines in Lyndoch, a sixth-generation estate with award-winning reds, whites and fortifieds; and Château Tanunda, one of Australia's oldest wineries, established in 1890 and famous for Old Vine Expressions from some of the world's oldest vines. Lunch happens at a winery restaurant, so you're eating where you're tasting.
Two optional stops fit in if time allows: Maggie Beer's Farm Shop, the curated destination of the TV personality and MasterChef regular, a 5-minute drive from Kersbrook Hill; and Barossa Chocolate Factory, a 10-minute drive further, where you can browse chocolates, coffee and cakes in the afternoon. Let your guide know at the start of the tour if you want either one. The vehicle is air-conditioned, and your driver-guide provides commentary throughout. Wine tastings are for guests 18 and over. Bring government ID.
