This tour picks you up at your Darwin hotel before dawn, drives you east along the Arnhem Highway (where wallabies, dingoes and buffalo move through the Territory landscape), and stops for breakfast around sunrise. By 8:30am you're in Jabiru, where you transfer to a 4WD vehicle and cross the East Alligator River at Cahill's Crossing—the boundary into Aboriginal lands where permits are required and you become guests of the traditional owners.
The guides are local indigenous people whose ancestors painted the rock art you're about to see and have been telling stories through these images for centuries. At Injalak Hill, you walk over uneven surfaces and boulders to reach some of the world's most significant rock art galleries. The climb is taken at a leisurely pace, but the terrain demands agility; there are no handrails or maintained paths. You eat lunch at the top. On the return journey, you stop at an arts center for afternoon tea and have the chance to buy work directly from local artists. The drive back crosses Cahill's Crossing again and returns you to your hotel in Darwin.
Morning tea and lunch are provided, with vegetarian and coeliac options available if you give notice. Sunscreen and insect repellent are on hand. The guide speaks English, and children are welcome from age 7. Because the tour operates on dirt roads deep in the outback with no infrastructure, it is not suitable for travelers with mobility constraints.
