The Experience

I honestly didn’t expect Darwin to feel so layered — like you’re walking through time, but with tropical birds overhead. Our guide, Jo, met us right in the CBD and within ten minutes she was pointing out a mural I’d never have noticed. We wandered past this old cinema — apparently one of the few buildings that survived Cyclone Tracy. Jo had stories about people sneaking in during the wet season, back when movies were a real event. The Old Palmerston Town Hall is basically ruins now, just walls open to sky and wind. Standing there felt weirdly quiet, even though we were right in the city. Jo let us linger for a minute; someone in our group tried to guess what it looked like before WWII but none of us really could. Later at Bicentennial Park, parrots zipped over our heads while Jo told us about wartime shelters hidden under the grass. I still think about that view over the harbour — it’s not dramatic or anything, just peaceful in a way that sticks with you.
