The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the air — soft and salty, but somehow sweet too, right when we stepped out at the Butterfly Farm. Our guide, Miguel, grinned as he handed us bottled water (“You’ll need it!”), then led us through a tangle of green leaves and fluttering wings. There were kids giggling at a blue morpho landing on someone’s hat. I tried not to flinch when one brushed my arm — I’m not usually jumpy, but butterflies up close are something else. The humidity inside made my glasses fog up for a second; kind of funny how quickly you forget about little things like that when you’re watching these creatures hover.

Next stop was the Aruba Aloe Factory. The smell hit me before we even got off the coach — sharp and clean, almost medicinal. We wandered past rows of spiky plants under this huge sky. There were lizards darting between cracks and someone playing music from their phone nearby (not exactly ancient ambiance, but hey). By the time we reached the Natural Bridge ruins and its little “baby” bridge, I realized I hadn’t checked my phone in hours — just listening to wind and voices mixing together.
