The Experience

First thing I noticed was the air: kind of sweet and salty at once, with that faint green smell you only get near fields. We’d barely settled into the van when Jeff grinned back at us and said he hoped we liked stories. He meant it. At the Aruba Aloe Factory & Museum, our guide (I think her name was Marisol?) handed me a leaf to feel (cool and slick), and explained how this place has been running since 1890. There’s something about seeing old photos on faded walls while you can hear machines humming in the next room. I tried to pronounce “aloë” like she did but probably butchered it. She just laughed and kept going.

After that, we stopped at a little museum in the center of Aruba: honestly, I lost track of all the names because I was too busy watching locals wave to each other across the street. It felt like everyone knew everyone else. Then came the Donkey Sanctuary. I didn’t expect to get attached to those donkeys, but there’s this one with a lopsided ear who followed me around until I ran out of snacks (they give you some to feed them). My hands smelled grassy for ages after.

The last part was my favorite: San Nicolas’ art district. Sun bouncing off murals so bright they almost hurt your eyes. Inside Space21.art, a few artists were chatting in Papiamento and working on jewelry: one let me try on a bracelet that still had clay dust on it. You could tell every piece had its own story. Jeff pointed out which ones were made by his cousin’s neighbor or someone he grew up with. The whole place felt alive, like if you blinked you’d miss something new happening on the walls outside.
