itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Visit exclusive Uco Valley wineries and lunch

  • Visit Bodega Diamandes winery
  • Taste 5 wines and 3 cheeses
  • Visit Piedra Negra winery
  • Taste vintage and elegant wines
  • Lunch at La Morada with Andes view

The first thing I noticed was the way the morning light hit the vines at Diamandes — almost too sharp, like someone had turned up the contrast on real life. Our guide, Lucía, waved us over before I could get lost in the view. “Try this one,” she said, handing me a glass that smelled faintly of blackberries and something earthy I couldn’t quite name. We wandered through the Clos de los Siete estate, listening to her stories about French winemakers and how they ended up here in Mendoza. The cheese pairing was a surprise (the blue cheese nearly made me rethink my life choices), but somehow it worked with the Malbec.

Piedra Negra felt different — quieter, maybe because of the breeze or just fewer people around. The Lurton family’s whites were nothing like what I’d tasted back home; Viognier and something called Tokaj? Lucía laughed when I tried to pronounce it (“It’s Hungarian, don’t worry!”). We stood out on the terrace for a while, looking out at Los Chacayes. There was this moment where everything went still except for a bird somewhere behind us and the clink of glasses. For a second I forgot about emails and deadlines — just sun, wine, and that odd feeling you get when you realize you’re exactly where you want to be.

Lunch at La Morada wasn’t rushed. The fire cooking at El Hornero sent up these little curls of smoke that smelled like rosemary and wood. The chef came out to ask if we wanted more bread (I did), and we sat there watching clouds slide over the Andes. It’s hard to explain how quiet it felt even with other tables nearby — maybe everyone was just as distracted by the view or maybe it was all that wine. Either way, I still think about that afternoon sometimes when things get loud back home.
