The experience

The Plata Mountain Range rises between 4,000 and 6,000 meters, and the ride takes you through that terrain at a pace that lets you absorb it. Don Daniel, who has spent his life in these mountains, leads the way on trails most visitors never find. The horses are raised on the property with the care that makes the ride safe and steady, so you can focus on the landscape instead of managing the animal.

The day builds around food and altitude. When you arrive at the mountain post, Marisa, the family cook, welcomes you with mates and homemade sopaipillas. Before the main barbecue, you'll eat a picada of local cheese, bread and salami. Then comes the asado itself: a full Argentinean barbecue cooked in the mountains and paired with Mendoza wine. The meal happens at 2,850 meters, so the views and the altitude frame everything you taste.

Pickup and return transport from Mendoza are included, along with bottled water throughout the day. The whole experience runs 10 hours, so you leave early and return with time to rest before dinner in town.

Is this one for you?Small groups ride together with Don Daniel, so you're never alone on the trail but the group stays intimate enough that the gaucho can adjust the pace and stops to the riders present. This works best if you're comfortable spending a full day in the saddle and at altitude, and want the real experience of a mountain gaucho's day rather than a quick ride with city views.
