The experience
San Telmo is where the ride starts: one of Buenos Aires' oldest neighborhoods, built on colonial architecture and tango. Your guide will point out the Russian Orthodox Holy Trinity Church, the San Telmo Market and Plaza Dorrego, where cafes and bars line the square and spontaneous tango performances happen on the street. This is the heart of tango in the city, and the energy of it carries through the whole first half of the morning or afternoon.
From there you'll roll into Parque Lezama with its rustic catwalks and half-underground installations, then into La Boca: the neighborhood that draws most visitors. The buildings are painted in bright colors, a legacy of Italian settlement, and Caminito is the main pedestrianized street where local artists sell their work. After La Boca, the route opens up into Puerto Madero, the city's newest neighborhood, where old docks have been converted into restaurants and offices with views back across the water. Then comes the Ecological Reserve, an 865-acre nature reserve between the city and the Rio de la Plata, before the tour finishes at Plaza de Mayo, where you'll see Casa Rosada, the Cabildo and the Metropolitan Cathedral.
The bike is a comfy beach cruiser, and you get a helmet, bottled water and a guide who speaks both English and Spanish. The pace is easy pedaling, and the guide stops you periodically to stretch and take photos. If it's raining lightly, rain gear is provided. If it's pouring, the operator usually cancels and will call to confirm. Electric bikes are available on request for anyone who'd prefer not to ride at the same pace for the full three hours.
