The experience
The tour leaves Mendoza early at 7:30 AM and follows the historical Route 7 that San Martín, Argentina's liberator, once traveled. The drive itself is the opening act: you pass Potrerillos lake on the way to Uspallata, where a coffee break and buffet breakfast wait. The landscape shifts as you climb toward the high mountain passes, and the road itself becomes part of what you came to see.
Puente del Inca (a natural rock bridge formed over the Río Las Cuevas) marks the next stop before you enter Aconcagua Park. Weather permitting, you'll hike for between 1 and 2 hours to reach views of the Stone Sentinel, the mountain's most photographed face. The hike's length depends on conditions and your own pace. The guide adjusts the route as needed. At 6,962 meters (22,800 feet), Aconcagua stands as the tallest peak in the Americas, and from the trail you see why climbers and photographers return to this spot.
Lunch is a traditional Asado (a homemade spread of empanadas and grilled meat) served back in Uspallata, with a vegetarian option available if you request it at booking. Wine from Lutron Piedra Negra winery in the Uco Valley accompanies the meal. The return drive to Mendoza gives you time to rest after the day's elevation and exertion. The tour runs year-round and operates in all weather. The operator recommends long pants, a wind-resistant layer, sunscreen, hat and sunglasses, and in winter, gloves and a scarf.
