The Experience

The 4x4 is already climbing toward Cerro Arco when you realize how far the city has already dropped below. Your instructor—licensed by Argentina's free flight federation—sits beside you, pointing out the thermal lines that will lift you higher once you're airborne. The vehicle cuts through scrub and rock for about 20 minutes until the takeoff ramp comes into view, a flat stretch of packed earth where the wind funnels up from the pre-mountain range. This is where the paragliding flight actually begins, though you haven't left the ground yet.

Once you're harnessed in and the instructor runs through the launch sequence, the first few steps are almost ordinary—a few quick strides into the wind, and then the canopy fills. The ground falls away faster than you'd expect. At 1,650 meters above sea level, the city spreads out in one direction and the Andes foothills roll in another, and for the next 20 or 30 minutes you're not really thinking about the view so much as the strange fact that you're floating.
