Thirteen ziplines, suspension bridges, and a bird's-eye view of the gorge

Zipline through the Antigua rainforest on a half-day activity featuring 13 aerial lines ranging up to 328 feet, suspension bridges crossing a gorge, and a professional guide. The course takes you above fruit trees, vines and mossy boulders while you listen to native birdsong. Pickup from St John's is included. You'll need at least moderate fitness and a minimum height of 5 feet. A certificate of completion comes with the booking.

The experience

You start with a 40-minute air-conditioned taxi ride from St John's to the rainforest. Once there, trained guides fit you with a safety harness and helmet, walk you through the briefing, and lead you to the first zipline. The course itself is 13 separate lines strung across the canopy, with most of them crisscrossing the gorge so you're suspended above the landscape for large stretches. The longest runs 328 feet, and between ziplines you'll walk along the trail and cross suspension bridges that keep you moving through the foliage.

What makes this different from a ground tour is that you're operating the equipment the whole time: clipping in, launching yourself, controlling your descent. The guides stay with you throughout, but the work and the adrenaline are yours. You'll see the rainforest from above: fruit trees, vines, mossy boulders, and the birds that live in the canopy. Water stations are set up along the course, and you get a fruit drink included. If you want a photo of yourself mid-flight, the guides can arrange that for an extra cost.

When you finish the last line, you walk back to meet your guide for the return taxi to St John's. You'll have a certificate of completion in hand. The whole outing, from pickup to drop-off, takes 3.5 hours.
