The experience
The day starts with a 7:30 pickup at your hotel and a drive to the port. On the boat ride out to the first dive site, the guide walks you through the equipment, basic underwater signals and dive techniques, so if you've never been down before, you're not going in blind. The boat heads to a coral reef in Vietnam's first marine protected area, where the water holds more than 350 species of corals and reef fish in sizes and colors that photograph well if you bring an underwater camera.
Your first dive runs 15 to 20 minutes. If you don't have a diving license or have never dived, a diving instructor stays with you the whole time, helping you manage buoyancy and technique on the ocean floor. If you're already certified, you explore on your own pace. After you surface, there's a rest break on the boat with tea, coffee, water, fruit and snacks. At 11:00, you choose: a second dive if you're certified, or snorkeling if you're not. Lunch at a local restaurant happens at 12:30, and you're back at your hotel by 1:30 p.m.
The activity is open to anyone six years old and up, though it's not recommended for people with cardiovascular conditions, high blood pressure, spinal injuries or pregnancy. You need at least moderate fitness to participate. Bad weather or local management announcements can cancel or reschedule the trip, and hotels outside central Nha Trang may incur a surcharge that the operator will confirm after booking.
