The experience
Your ship's port call gives you 5 to 7 hours to reach Hue city, 140 kilometers from Da Nang. If you board at Tien Sa Port, the drive crosses the Hai Van Pass (the coastal road Jeremy Clarkson called "one of the best coastal roads in the world"), with a stop at Hai Van Quan, the highest point between Da Nang and Hue, for photos of Lang Co Bay. From Chanmay Port the route is shorter. Your guide meets you at the dock and drives you directly to the city.
The Citadel is the centerpiece: a walled fortress that served as the capital of the Nguyen Dynasty for 140 years, from 1805 to 1945, and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After time inside the walls, you break for lunch (not included), then head to Thien Mu Pagoda, a Buddhist monastery founded in 1601. The Perfume River cruise follows. You board a dragon boat and drift downriver, watching the city recede. The final stop is Khai Dinh Tomb, built in 1920 on feng shui principles for an emperor. Your driver returns you to the port in time for the ship.
