The day starts before dawn. Pickup happens at your hotel in Da Nang between 8:00 and 8:30 am (or earlier from Hoi An), and the drive north to Hue takes you straight onto Hai Van Pass, one of the most photographed coastal roads in Southeast Asia. You stop at the peak for 30 minutes to stand in the wind and look down at the water, then another quick stop at Lap An Lagoon where the view opens onto Lang Co Beach. The whole stretch is the reason people book this route instead of flying.

By 11 am you're at Khai Dinh Tomb, the last of the royal burial sites and the one that mixes Eastern and Western architecture in ways that still look strange and deliberate. The Citadel comes next at 1:30 pm—the walled palace complex where 13 Nguyen Kings ruled, with the Ngo Mon Gate, the Nine Dynastic Urns, and the Thai Hoa Palace inside. This is the centerpiece of the day and where the guide's knowledge matters most; without it, you're walking through old walls. At 3 pm you reach Thien Mu Pagoda, Hue's largest, a seven-story structure that sits on the riverbank and has been a symbol of Vietnamese history since the 17th century. The return drive to Da Nang takes about two and a half hours, arriving around 6 pm.

Lunch is 30 to 45 minutes in the middle of the afternoon at a restaurant in Hue serving local cuisine.
