The experience
The tour starts with a pickup at your hotel in an air-conditioned van, then transfers you to the Jeep at the company parking in Duong Dong. The vehicle itself (an original US Army Jeep from the Vietnam War era) is the centerpiece: you'll ride in it for the full route through the southern part of the island, where the terrain is flatter than the north and the landscape is built around fishing and traditional crafts rather than mountains. The guide meets you at the parking lot and travels with you throughout, speaking English and Vietnamese.
The route moves through four main stops. First is Phu Quoc Pearl Museum, where you see how pearls are grown inside oysters and how local artisans make souvenirs from oyster shells. Next is An Thoi fishing village, where you watch the fishing boats and fish farms, and learn how the fishermen live and work. The third stop is Coconut Prison, a war museum showing the conditions of the Vietnam War prison and the tunnels prisoners dug to escape. Then comes the Fish Sauce Factory, where you watch the production process and taste the sauce. Lunch happens at Sao Beach, a white sand beach on the southern coast where you eat and drink before a rest period. If you want, you can experience the Hon Thom Cable Car (the world's longest) in the Suoi Tien countryside area on the way back. You pay separately for cable car tickets. The tour returns you to your hotel by 3pm.
Cold beers and bottled mineral water are available throughout the day. The six-hour timeframe fits the southern route's pace and the number of stops. The flat terrain and shorter distances make this version more comfortable than a northern mountain tour. Lunch is included. Personal expenses like cable car tickets or pearl purchases are on you.
