The Experience
You start with hotel pickup in the early morning—either from Dong Hoi city or from Phong Nha, depending on where you're staying—and head into Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. The landscape is limestone mountains all around, and the caves sit inside this protected area. Your guide handles the route and the timing, so you're not figuring out how to get there or what to do once you arrive.
Paradise Cave is where the morning goes. Discovered by the British Cave Research Association in 2005 and fully explored by 2010, it stretches 31km and holds the title of Asia's longest dry cave. The widest section opens to around 150 meters across, and the ceiling reaches 100 meters high. You walk through formations of white crystal stalactites and stalagmites that look like glass pillars—the deeper sections have a primitive, almost untouched quality. The cave was named for the way it feels as you move through it, and the scale of the space makes the walk memorable without being strenuous.
After lunch (included, with vegetarian options available if you request them at booking), you move to Phong Nha Cave, which is a different experience entirely. This one is a water cave—you travel by boat through an underground river that runs over 13km and reaches toward the Laos border. Stalactites and stalagmites line the passage, lit by installed lighting that makes the formations sparkle. The boat ride is the main event here, and it's the contrast to the morning walk that makes the day hold together: one cave you explore on foot, the other you drift through by water.
The tour wraps with hotel drop-off. National park fees, the guide, bottled water, and local taxes are all covered. The whole day runs about 9 hours from pickup to return.
