The experience

Day one starts with pickup in the Phong Nha area at 8am, followed by a safety briefing at headquarters and a 45-minute drive into Phong Nha–Ke Bang National Park. The hike begins at 10am on the jungle trail, climbing to Wind Peak by noon for lunch, then descending a steep slope called Dốc Lươn before reaching Hang Over Cave at 2:30pm. You'll gear up and explore this 3.2-kilometer cave, arriving at Pygmy Cave's main entrance by 5pm to set up the overnight campsite at the cave mouth. Dinner happens at the campsite, and you sleep in a hammock with a sleeping bag on the cave floor.

Day two begins with breakfast inside Pygmy Cave at 8am, followed by final photographs before the jungle trek back. You'll reach headquarters by 3pm after a snack lunch on the trail. The entire route covers 11km on day one and 9km on day two, combining jungle trekking with cave scrambling and rock climbing inside Hang Pygmy itself. A porter carries up to 3kg of your gear, and the guide manages safety and pacing throughout.

The cave itself is the draw: Hang Pygmy holds enormous stalagmites and stalactites in formations the operator describes as otherworldly. The tropical jungle growing inside the cave is what makes it unique among the world's largest caves. You'll move through both open passages and tight sections, so the experience is active exploration, not a guided walk on established paths.

Is this one for you?The strenuous pace (20km of jungle hiking plus 4.5km of cave exploration over two days) suits travelers with strong fitness who want to spend a full night inside the cave rather than see it as a day excursion. The overnight camp at the cave mouth is what the 2-day format unlocks. A 1-day version would only reach the cave entrance and return the same day.

Top questions

What is Hang Pygmy Cave and why is it worth two days?

Hang Pygmy is the world's fourth-largest cave and the only one with a tropical jungle ecosystem growing inside it. The 2-day format allows time to trek through the surrounding jungle, explore the full 4.5km length of the cave system, and camp overnight at the cave mouth so you experience the cave at different times of day rather than rushing through it as a day trip.

How physically demanding is the 2-day trek?

The tour covers 20km of jungle hiking and 4.5km inside the cave over two days, classified as strenuous. Day one includes climbing to Wind Peak, descending a steep slippery slope called Dốc Lươn, and navigating cave passages with rock scrambling and ascending. You'll need a high level of fitness. The operator does not recommend this tour for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy.

What gear and equipment does the tour provide?

The tour supplies a helmet, trekking boots in Euro sizes 36–45, headlight, life jacket, hammock, sleeping bag, and all camping gear for the overnight stay. A porter carries your personal gear up to 3kg. The operator suggests bringing your own trekking shoes if the provided sizes don't fit, and recommends against waterproof Goretex boots because they take too long to dry in the cave environment.

What meals and supplies are included over the two days?

All food and drink are included: lunch at Wind Peak on day one, dinner and breakfast at the campsite inside Hang Pygmy, and a snack lunch during the return trek on day two. You'll also receive a towel for use during the tour.

Does the tour include pickup from my hotel?

Pickup is included from the Phong Nha area at 8am on day one. If you're staying in Dong Hoi city or arriving by bus or train station, contact the operator for pricing and availability for those pickups, as they are not included in the standard tour price.

What is the minimum age and do I need any prior experience?

The minimum age is 16 years old. No prior caving or trekking experience is required, but you must have a high level of physical fitness and be comfortable with strenuous hiking, cave scrambling, and sleeping in a hammock underground.
