The experience
The day starts with a pickup in Phong Nha town at 8:30am. Your guide meets you at the cave mouth and walks beginners through paddling basics on calm water before the real kayaking begins. You'll spend the first hour paddling 3km into the cave in near-total darkness. The only light comes from the torches on your helmet. The limestone walls close in around you as you move deeper, and the sound of water echoes off stone.
At the 3km mark, you leave the kayaks and hike another 1.5km on foot through the cave passages. The walking section takes you to the underground lake, where the cave opens into a chamber large enough to swim in. The water is cool and still, and the rock ceiling rises high above. After swimming, you paddle back out and eat a picnic lunch outside the cave entrance around 1:30pm. The afternoon is spent kayaking through the grottoes (smaller cave chambers branching off the main river) before you return to town by 3pm.
All equipment is included: life jacket, helmet with a built-in torch, waterproof bag for your phone and camera, kayak and paddle. The guide speaks English and stays with your group throughout. The operator provides plastic shoes in sizes 37 to 43. If your size falls outside that range, bring your own trekking shoes. You can choose to be picked up either in Dong Hoi city or from the outskirts of Phong Nha town center, and you're welcome to bring a towel, dry clothes, and a swimsuit. A waterproof bag is provided to keep them dry during the paddling sections.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What's the difference between the kayaking part and the hiking part inside Phong Nha cave?
The first 3km is paddled on the underground river in darkness, then you leave the kayaks and walk 1.5km on foot through cave passages to reach the underground lake where you swim. After that, you paddle again through the grottoes on the way back out.
Do I need kayaking experience to book this?
No. The guide trains beginners on paddling technique at the cave mouth before you start, and you can practice on calm water first. The paddling itself is on a slow underground river, not whitewater.
What time does the activity end and how much of the day does it take?
Pickup is at 8:30am and you return to Phong Nha by 3pm, so the full day is about seven hours from start to finish. That leaves the rest of your afternoon free if you have other plans in the area.
What should I bring for the swimming part?
Bring a swimsuit or bikini. The operator provides a waterproof bag to keep your clothes and phone dry while you're paddling. You can also bring a towel and a set of dry clothes to change into after you swim.
Is Phong Nha cave in a national park?
Yes, Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. The cave system is part of the park and was evaluated by the British Royal Cave Association in 1997 as meeting seven global criteria for significance, including the longest wet cave, the highest entrance, and the most beautiful underground lake.
