The experience
What makes this different from a standard cave tour is that you're not following a marked boardwalk. You walk into the jungle first to find the entrance, then gear up with a helmet, torch, gloves, boots and other caving tools at the operation center in Khe Sung Village. The guide explains how to use each piece and what to expect. From there you move through the cave system on your own terms (crawling through tight sections, climbing over rock formations, swimming where the passages flood) covering more than 4km of passages that most cave visitors never reach.
The cave itself holds layers of history. During the Vietnam War, a massive stage was built inside the rock where artists performed for troops. Locals say General Vo Nguyen Giap commanded the southern front from this cave system. Before you enter Cha Loi, you stop at the A72 information station, a wartime communications hub, and at Long Dai Ferry on the Ho Chi Minh Road, a bombing target that is now a memorial. These stops frame the cave not as a natural wonder alone but as a place where the war shaped the landscape and the people still living there.
The day runs nine hours from pickup at your Dong Hoi or Phong Nha hotel. After the cave exploration and lunch at Khe Sung Village, Vietnamese dishes prepared on-site, you visit Hang Coi Village to meet Bru Van Kieu people and see how they live. You return to the car park by late afternoon. The guide, driver, meals, water, safety gear and first aid kit are all included. Tips for the guide and driver are optional.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English and Vietnamese.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
How far into the cave do you actually go?
The Cha Loi cave system stretches more than 4km, and you explore passages throughout that distance, crawling, climbing and swimming where the rock formations require it. This is not a short loop on a marked trail.
What caving tools do I get, and do I need experience to use them?
You're provided with a helmet, torch, gloves, walking boots and other safety equipment. The guide instructs you on how to use each tool and what the rules are before you enter the cave, so no prior caving experience is needed.
What is the A72 information station?
The A72 was a wartime communications center used to relay commands across the southern battlefield during the Vietnam War. It's now a historical site you visit on the way to the cave, showing how the landscape was used during the conflict.
Is this cave near Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park?
Cha Loi Cave is about 40km southwest of Dong Hoi and sits near Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park, so it's in the same region if you're visiting the park as well.
What happens if I'm not very fit?
The operator notes that moderate physical fitness is recommended because you'll be crawling, climbing and swimming through the cave passages. If you have concerns about your fitness level or any health conditions, contact the operator before booking to discuss what the day involves.
