The Experience

The day didn’t start perfectly—our driver got a little lost in Hanoi’s Old Quarter, so we circled the same noodle shop twice before finally picking up everyone. But honestly, it made the first coffee taste even better. By the time we reached Hoa Lu, our guide Minh was already cracking jokes about royal ghosts and how none of us would survive as 10th-century kings (“too soft,” he said, grinning at my sneakers). The old stone gates felt cool under my hand—so different from the city’s noise. There was incense burning somewhere close; it mixed with the morning air and I kept catching whiffs as Minh told stories about dynasties I’d barely heard of.

Lunch was a blur of dishes—rice, pork, something with tiny river fish that Minh insisted we try (“just eat the bones!”). We laughed when someone spilled tea all over the tablecloth. After that, we clambered into these low wooden sampan boats at Tam Coc. The boat lady rowed with her feet (seriously!) while we drifted through three caves along the Ngo Dong River. It was almost silent except for her oars and birds in the reeds. The limestone cliffs looked impossibly steep from down on the water. I remember ducking my head under one cave roof and thinking how strange it felt to be inside a mountain like that.

Biking after lunch was maybe my favorite part—even though my legs were jelly by then. We pedaled past kids waving from doorways and water buffalo standing in muddy fields like they owned the place. The air smelled green, if that makes sense? At one point I stopped just to watch sunlight flicker across the flooded rice paddies. Minh waited for me, didn’t rush anyone—he just pointed out some wildflowers and shrugged like “take your time.” I still think about that view sometimes.
