The Experience
The day starts at your hotel, where your guide picks you up on a motorbike. You ride to a local market first to watch the daily routines of Vietnamese vendors and buyers, then head to the floating market where people live and do business on boats. Your guide explains how the market works and brings cold coconut juice to drink there. From there you cross Fashion Street, a major shopping hub for locals, and move into the specialized wholesale districts: the electricity accessories market stacked with old and new parts, the motorbike accessories market full of spare pieces and vintage items, and the sprawling Chinatown wholesale market built by Chinese-Vietnamese traders.
The route then takes you through Chinatown's smaller markets—a birds market along the street, a colorful fabric market, a lantern market with Chinese-style decorations, a Chinese medicine market and a fishes market with fresh catch laid out along the pavement. You stop at the biggest flower market to walk among different kinds of blooms and take photos, then sit down for Vietnamese coffee at a local coffee shop in the oldest part of the city. The last two stops are the war objects market, where you see items from the Vietnam War era, and the antique market where vendors sell objects hundreds of years old. By the end you've crossed the city on the back of a bike and seen how nine different kinds of markets operate.
Two options shape the day: the full Market Tour includes hotel pickup, guide, helmet, bottled water, Vietnamese coffee and coconut juice; the Rush Saigon option is a two-hour version by scooter with guide only, no food or drinks, and any time over two hours costs $6 per hour extra. Both run with a live English-speaking guide. Children from age one are welcome.
