itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Explore Saigon highlights by motorbike

  • Visit Nguyen Thien Thuat Oldest Apartment
  • Pass by biggest flower market
  • Explore Nguyen Hue Walking Street
  • Visit Notre-Dame Cathedral and Post Office
  • Visit Thich Quang Duc Monument

I’ll admit, I was a little nervous about the idea of weaving through Saigon traffic on a motorbike — but curiosity won. Our guide, Minh, showed up right at my hotel (District 1), all smiles and somehow balancing an extra helmet and a rain poncho just in case. The city felt different from the back seat: wind in my face, street vendors calling out over the hum of engines, that faint scent of incense and fried dough mixing together. We zipped straight to Nguyen Thien Thuat, this old apartment complex where laundry flapped above us and kids darted between scooters. Minh waved to an old lady selling iced coffee; she grinned and shouted something I didn’t catch.

Next thing I knew we were rolling past what must be the biggest flower market in Saigon — buckets overflowing with bright lilies from Dong Thap province. You could smell them even with all the exhaust in the air. Minh pointed out which flowers are for weddings and which are for funerals (I still can’t remember which is which). Then suddenly we were downtown at Nguyen Hue Walking Street, dodging selfie sticks and pausing to stare up at the Opera House and City Hall — both grand in that French colonial way that feels out of place but also kind of perfect here. The Notre-Dame Cathedral was quieter than I expected; inside it felt cool and hushed, almost like the city noise couldn’t reach us for a minute.

Our last stop was the Thich Quang Duc Monument. Minh explained his story softly while scooters zipped by behind us — it’s heavy history, but important. We stood there longer than I thought we would. Honestly, two hours went by fast. If you’re thinking about a day trip around Saigon or want to see highlights without sitting in traffic forever, this motorbike tour is wild but worth it. Also: if you get lucky with an Ao Dai rider (book ahead), it makes for some fun photos — mine came out blurry but I kind of love them anyway.
