The experience
We bounced along the narrow lanes of the Old Quarter in this old army jeep: felt like a movie for a second. Our guide, Minh, kept pointing out odd little details I’d never have noticed on my own: a woman balancing baskets of green mangoes, the way everyone seemed to know exactly where to step even with scooters weaving everywhere. The smell of grilled pork kind of followed us through some alleys. I think I was hungry already. We stopped at a tiny temple tucked behind a street market. Incense drifted out and mingled with the exhaust. It’s chaotic but there’s something about it that just makes sense once you’re in it.
Then we rumbled over to Train Street. Minh checked his phone for the train schedule. He said sometimes it comes right on time, sometimes not at all. We squeezed into this café so close to the tracks I could’ve touched them if I leaned out (I didn’t). A kid waved at us from a balcony above and then suddenly everyone was laughing because someone’s hat blew off when the train finally crawled past.
