The Experience

We were halfway through our welcome drink at Tuan Chau Marina when our guide Minh grinned and asked if we’d ever tried Vietnamese coffee — I hadn’t, so he handed me his own cup. Strong, sweet, almost chocolatey. The boat itself looked like something out of an old film, all polished wood and brass. As we pulled away from the harbor, the usual city noise faded fast; just the hum of the engine and that salty air. It’s funny how quickly you forget about your phone out there.

Lunch was a blur of flavors I can’t quite name (still thinking about that fish with lemongrass). Minh pointed out shapes in the limestone cliffs — one looked exactly like a sleeping dragon if you squinted. By mid-afternoon we reached Dark and Bright Cave in Lan Ha Bay. Paddling under that low archway in a kayak felt both peaceful and a bit nerve-wracking (I kept worrying I’d drop my paddle). The water was so clear you could see little silver fish darting around. Later we swam off the side of the boat — cold at first, but worth it.

Back on deck for “happy hour,” there was this soft gold light over the bay that made everything look warmer than it actually was. We tried making spring rolls with Chef Linh — mine kept falling apart but she just laughed and showed me again. Dinner was outside on the sundeck since the weather held up; lanterns swinging slightly in the breeze. Some folks went squid fishing after but honestly, I just wanted to sit quietly for a while and watch the lights flicker across Halong Bay.

The next morning started early with Tai Chi on deck (my balance is terrible but nobody cared). After a light breakfast we headed to Cat Ba Island’s Trung Trang cave — cool air inside, echoes everywhere. I didn’t expect to feel so small standing in that huge cavern. Then back to the main boat for one last meal before docking at Tuan Chau again. Saying goodbye felt strange — like we’d slipped into another era for a day or two, then snapped right back.
