The experience
The day starts with a pickup from your Hanoi hotel in the Old Quarter or at Opera House around 7am, then a 2.5 to 3 hour drive north to Halong International Cruise Port with one stop halfway. You board the IRIS cruise around 10:30am, check in at the Legacy Voyages lounge, and sit down to a premium seafood buffet lunch with 50 fusion dishes (local and international) served in two restaurants. The boat then moves to Luon Cave, a 100-meter tunnel where you kayak or take a sampan boat through the water, paddling under limestone walls in one of the bay's quietest corners.
After the cave, you walk through Surprise Cave (Sung Sot Grotto), the largest in Halong Bay, where stalactites and stalagmites rise in shapes that shift as you move through the chambers. Next is Titop Island, where you can swim in the bay, climb to the summit for a panorama of the whole landscape, or stay on the sundeck and rest. From 3:30pm onward, a live band (singer, musician and DJ) performs while you cruise back toward port, and you can soak in the four-season Jacuzzi on the second floor or eat afternoon snacks on the sundeck while the music plays.
The return to Halong port takes 30 minutes, then the bus carries you back to Hanoi, arriving at your hotel around 8:15pm.
