The Experience

I didn’t really know what to expect from a Halong Bay day trip—I’d seen the photos, but they never show you the little things. Like the way the air shifts when you step out of the Hanoi Old Quarter at dawn and climb into the minibus. Our guide, Minh, handed us cold towels and grinned like he’d done this a thousand times (he probably has). The road to Halong is long enough for a nap or two, but I mostly stared out at rice paddies and wondered if the bay would feel as unreal as it looks in pictures.

The first thing that hit me on board was the smell—fresh sea air mixed with something buttery from the kitchen. We checked in at the port and suddenly we were gliding past limestone islands, sunlight bouncing everywhere. Lunch was this massive seafood buffet (I’m still not sure what half of it was, but Minh insisted I try jellyfish salad—chewy, salty, not bad). The Iris Cruise felt fancy but not stiff; people wandered between decks with plates piled high or just leaned over the railings watching fishing boats slip by. It’s hard to explain how quiet it gets out there except for the occasional laugh or clink of glasses.

Kayaking at Luon Cave was my favorite part. The cave isn’t huge—more like a tunnel—but paddling through it you catch these echoes and see monkeys darting around above. I nearly dropped my paddle trying to take a photo (classic me). After that we walked through Surprise Cave (Sung Sot), which Minh called “the dragon’s mouth”—the stalactites really do look like teeth if you squint. Ti Top Island came next: some folks swam, others climbed up for views. I just sat on the beach for a while letting my feet sink into cool sand because honestly, sometimes that’s all you want.

Later there was live music on the sundeck—a singer with a voice that carried across the water and a DJ mixing soft beats as we drifted back toward port. There’s an outdoor jacuzzi up top too; I didn’t get in but a British couple did, laughing about being “prunes by sunset.” The light turned gold over Halong Bay and everyone got quiet for a bit. I keep thinking about that hush—the kind that makes you realize you’re somewhere worth remembering.
