The Experience

We stepped onto the Emperor Cruise at Tuan Chau Marina just after noon—honestly, I was still a bit groggy from the drive out of Hanoi, but the salty air woke me up fast. The crew greeted us with these cold towels and a welcome drink that tasted faintly of lemongrass. Our guide, Minh, laughed when my friend tried to pronounce “Xin chào”—I think she appreciated the effort. The boat itself looked like something from another era—polished wood everywhere and art on the walls. I kept touching the railing just to feel how smooth it was.

Lunch came quick—set menu, lots of little plates. Fish in caramel sauce, some sort of crunchy salad with peanuts (I never caught the name), and rice that actually tasted smoky. We cruised out into Halong Bay, past those limestone cliffs you see in every photo. But being there is different—the water is this odd green color, almost jade, and you can hear birds echoing off the rocks if you lean over the balcony. Minh pointed out a floating fishing village; kids waved at us from tiny boats.

The afternoon was for kayaking near Hang Luon. I’m not much of a kayaker—I mostly drifted and watched jellyfish pulse under the surface while my partner paddled circles around me. Later we swam off Titov Island; the water felt cooler than I expected but it was sticky-hot outside so it worked out. There was an afternoon tea on deck—canapés I couldn’t pronounce—and then a cooking demo where Minh showed us how to roll spring rolls (mine fell apart instantly). Sunset turned everything gold for about five minutes. That’s when I realized how quiet it got—just some soft music from upstairs and clinking glasses.

Sleeping on the bay is strange in a good way. Our cabin had this huge window; I left it open all night to listen to water slap against the hull. Breakfast was light—pastries and strong coffee—before we hiked through Me Cung Cave. The air inside smelled damp and old, like earth after rain. Stalactites everywhere; Minh told stories about ancient people living here but honestly I was too busy watching light shift through cracks in the rock to catch every word.

I still think about that view back toward shore as we had brunch—the cliffs fading into mist behind us while everyone sat quietly over their noodles or fruit plates. It felt like leaving something unfinished, in a way—but maybe that’s just how Halong Bay gets under your skin.
