Summary

Small Group Halong Bay Cruise with Cave Visits & Kayaking

You’ll explore Halong Bay’s caves and islands by boat and kayak on this small group tour from Hanoi. There’s plenty of time for fresh seafood lunch onboard and wandering through Thien Cung Cave’s cool chambers. With friendly guides and easy transport included, it’s a relaxed way to see one of Vietnam’s most famous sights—even if it gets busy in summer.

experience

What’s the experience like?

The morning in Hanoi’s Old Quarter always feels a bit hazy—bikes whirring past, the smell of strong coffee drifting out from tiny cafés. Our guide waved us over by the Opera House, right on Trang Tien street, just before 8am. If you’re not staying nearby, you’ll need to get there early; traffic can be unpredictable. The shuttle bus was comfortable enough, and they handed out cold bottled water as we settled in for the drive to Tuan Chau harbor. It took about two and a half hours, but I barely noticed—there’s always something to see out the window: rice paddies, roadside fruit stands, even a few water buffalo if you’re lucky.

By noon, we were stepping onto the boat at Tuan Chau. The crew greeted us with a quick welcome drink—sweet and cold—and then we found our seats for lunch. The food came out fast: lots of fresh seafood (I remember the shrimp especially), some stir-fried greens, and rice. As we ate, the boat glided past those famous limestone islands—Dinh Huong Islet first, then Kissing Chicken Rock (locals call it Ga Choi). Our guide pointed out Ba Hang fishing village too; you could spot little boats bobbing near the wooden houses.

After lunch, we docked near Thien Cung Cave. It’s cooler inside than you’d expect—the air felt damp and earthy. The cave itself is huge, with colored lights showing off all sorts of rock formations overhead (our guide told us stories about dragons and ancient legends). Dau Go Cave was next door—less crowded but just as interesting if you like wandering through echoey chambers.

The last part was my favorite: kayaking around Luon Cave and the floating villages. If paddling isn’t your thing, there’s an option for a bamboo boat ride instead (the local rowers are chatty). Sometimes you’ll see bits of floating trash—our guide explained it’s because of changing tides bringing debris from elsewhere—but honestly, it didn’t spoil the view much. By late afternoon we were back on deck watching other boats drift by as the sun started to dip behind the karsts.
