The shuttle bus takes roughly three hours to reach Tuan Chau harbour in Halong Bay, where you board the cruise vessel around noon. Once on board, you get lunch before the boat moves into the bay, passing Dinh Huong island, Kissing Chicken rock and the Ba Hang fishing villages as you cruise toward the caves.
Thien Cung and Dau Go are the two main cave stops. You walk through both on foot, moving at an easy pace with the guide explaining the formations and local history. Between the caves, you have a choice: paddle a kayak around the limestone karsts and through the tunnel near the villages, or take a small bamboo boat if you prefer not to paddle. Either way, you're on the water moving through the landscape instead of watching it pass. The kayaking is the centerpiece here.
