The experience
The tour leaves Dalat heading south toward Lak Lake, a 160-kilometer ride through agricultural land where you stop at a flower greenhouse, coffee plantation and silk village to watch the full process of silk production, from silkworm keeping through the factory. You'll visit the Dragon Pagoda and Elephant Waterfall, taste Vietnamese coffee in a local café and see how rice wine is made before arriving at Lak Lake to stay overnight in a homestay run by the Jun minority (M'Nong people).
Day two takes you from Lak Lake to Buon Me Thuot, 140 kilometers away. A half-hour trek to the top of Elephant Rock breaks up the ride, offering views across rice paddies. Once in Buon Me Thuot, you travel the Ho Chi Minh Trail to reach three waterfalls (Dray Sap, Gia Long and Dray Nur), and swim in a natural pool fed by fresh water in the middle of the park before returning to the city for the night at a 2-star hotel.
The final day is a 150-kilometer descent to the coast. You start with the hill tribe museum in Buon Me Thuot, then drive through Ede people villages along mountain roads before sliding down the Phoenix Pass to a fishing village and arriving in Nha Trang by 4 p.m. The entire route is covered by air-conditioned vehicle with an English-speaking guide.
Is this one for you?Three days is the span needed to cross the Central Highlands without rushing. It gives you time to trek Elephant Rock, visit three separate waterfalls and stay overnight in a minority village, which a shorter tour cannot fit. The motorbike transport and fixed itinerary mean the logistics hold together without you arranging transport between stops.
