Summary

Swim with turtles then drift in Vanuatu’s blue lagoon before waterfalls

You’ll swim with turtles at Avi Bay, float in Port Vila’s Blue Lagoon, and wander through Eden on the River’s cascades—all with a local guide who makes everything feel easygoing. Lunch is included too. Expect laughter, new textures underfoot, and maybe a moment or two that’ll stick with you long after you leave.

experience

What’s the experience like?

I didn’t actually think I’d end up face to face with a giant turtle before lunch, but that’s how this Port Vila day trip started. Avi Bay was our first stop—Avi means turtle, which our guide explained with this big smile, like he never gets tired of saying it. The air smelled a bit salty and green at the same time, and you could hear birds over the sound of kids splashing in the pool. I tried to touch a baby turtle but it darted away (they’re faster than you’d guess). Swimming next to the big ones felt weirdly peaceful—like they were just letting us visit their world for a bit.

After drying off—my towel still smelled like sunscreen—we headed to the Blue Lagoon. It’s one of those places that looks fake in photos but is somehow even more unreal when you’re there. The water is so clear you can see your toes, even if you’re not exactly sure where the bottom is. Some local kids showed us how to jump from a rope swing; I chickened out at first but then just went for it (screamed a little on the way down). Our guide laughed and said everyone does that their first time.

Lunch was simple—rice, grilled fish, some sweet fruit—but honestly, after swimming all morning it tasted perfect. Last stop was Eden on the River. The path felt soft under my feet, kind of spongy from all the rain lately. There’s this cascade tucked between vines and mossy rocks; standing under it felt cold and sharp and really alive. I noticed an older couple just sitting quietly by the water, not talking much—just watching everything move around them. I get why people say Vanuatu gets under your skin.
