The experience
The tour starts with pickup from your Samarkand hotel in a premium Kia Sportage, then covers the 240-kilometer drive to Bukhara with your guide. Once there, you move through thirteen stops on foot: the 16th-century Madrassah, the oldest functioning synagogue in the city, the Puppet Theatre made of paper Moche, and three separate trade domes built centuries ago. One for general goods, one that sold headwear, and one still operating as a gold market. The Kalyan Minaret, the most recognizable monument in the city, anchors the second half of the tour.
The Ark palace, the main residence of Bukhara's rulers, shows the scale of the city's former power. You'll also see the Ulugbek madrassah, the first one built by Tamerlane's grandson, and the 40-pillar mosque where a guide-led observation reveals why only twenty pillars are visible: a structural secret worth the stop. The tour ends at the premier mausoleum of Bukhara's founding dynasty before the drive back to Samarkand, arriving in the late evening.
The vehicle stays with you for the full day, so there's no waiting for public transport or arranging separate rides between sites. Seat heating and cooling adapt to the season, and the air conditioning handles Bukhara's heat. Water is complimentary throughout, and the guide speaks English or Russian depending on your preference.
