Multiple mountain lakes in a single day means crossing a border and climbing through significant elevation.

A day trip from Samarkand to Tajikistan's Seven Lakes combines border crossing, cultural stops in Penjikent and the ancient city of Sarazm, and a full day exploring a chain of seven mountain reservoirs between 1,640 and 2,332 meters. The route includes private transportation, a professional guide in English or Russian, and a traditional Tajik picnic; the walk from the sixth lake to the seventh is optional. Choose the group tour for shared costs, the private tour for your own schedule, or the two-day option to spend more time in the mountains.

The Experience

The day starts at your meeting point in Samarkand, where your guide collects you for the drive to the Uzbek-Tajik border. You'll cross on foot through border control with your guide, then meet a driver-partner on the Tajik side for the transfer to Penjikent. This border crossing is the logistical spine of the trip—it's why the guide stays with you the whole way and why the timing matters.

Before the lakes, you visit Sarazm, an ancient city that sits at the edge of the Zarafshan Valley, and explore the sights of Penjikent itself. Lunch is a traditional Tajik meal in the mountains. Then the road climbs toward the lakes: Nezhigon at 1,640 meters, Soya, Gushor, Nofin, Khurdak, Marguzor (the largest, at 2,140 meters), and finally Khazorchashma at 2,332 meters. The 15-kilometer stretch between the first and last lake takes 4 to 5 hours with stops at each reservoir. You can drive to Marguzor, but reaching Khazorchashma means walking—it's optional, so you choose how far to go.

The lakes sit in country where primitive petroglyphs survive nearby and semi-precious stones were mined in the Middle Ages. The stories and legends tied to these places are part of what the guide brings to each stop. In the evening, you return to the border, cross back into Uzbekistan, and drive back to Samarkand.
