The experience

The tour starts with a morning pickup from your Bukhara hotel and heads toward Nurata through two stops that frame the region's history. Gijduvan Ceramic School lets you watch potters at work using techniques passed down for centuries, and Sarmishsoy Gorge holds thousands of Bronze Age petroglyphs carved into the rock: hunting scenes and rituals frozen in stone. You'll reach Nurata itself, where the sacred Chashma Spring and the ruins of Alexander the Great's fortress sit at the edge of town, then continue into the mountains to the villages of Sentob, Uhun, Asrab, and Hayat.

In Hayat Village you check into a family-run guesthouse and join a traditional cooking masterclass using fresh ingredients grown locally. Dinner is what you've just made, eaten with your hosts in their home. The next morning starts with breakfast, then a guided hike through the Nuratau Mountains with a local guide who knows the trails, the viewpoints overlooking the valley, and the flora and fauna. Optional horseback riding is available if you want a different vantage on the landscape. After lunch back at the guesthouse, you say goodbye and begin the drive to Samarkand or return to Bukhara, arriving in the evening.

The tour includes air-conditioned transport, accommodation in the guesthouse, all meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), and the guided hiking tour led by someone from the village. A short hiking option is available if you prefer a lighter pace on day two. Horse riding is not included but can be arranged separately.

Is this one for you?Book this tour if you want to move beyond standard sightseeing and spend a night actually living in a mountain village: the guesthouse stay and the cooking class are what make that possible. The guided hike on day two is moderate in difficulty, so choose this if you're comfortable walking mountain trails but don't need a strenuous alpine climb. If you're traveling between Bukhara and Samarkand anyway, the flexible drop-off means you can use the tour as your transport between the two cities.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What's the Gijduvan Ceramic School like, and do I get to try pottery myself?

Gijduvan Ceramic School is a working center where you watch artisans throw and decorate pottery using techniques that go back centuries. The stop is observational. You see the craft in action but don't participate in a hands-on class during this tour.

How difficult is the hiking on day two?

The guided hiking tour through the Nuratau Mountains is moderate in difficulty and suited to travelers with at least moderate fitness. You hike scenic trails with a local guide, explore viewpoints, and see the region's flora and fauna. A shorter hiking option is available if you prefer a lighter day.

Do I stay in a hotel or a private home?

You stay in a family-run guesthouse in Hayat Village, one of the mountain settlements. It's a working village home where you'll sleep, eat meals you've helped prepare, and meet your hosts, not a commercial hotel.

Can I choose to end the tour in Samarkand instead of returning to Bukhara?

Yes. You can book the tour with drop-off in Samarkand or drop-off back in Bukhara. Both options follow the same itinerary through day two. The difference is where the driver takes you at the end.

What does the cooking masterclass involve?

You learn to prepare local Uzbek dishes using fresh ingredients from the village. The class happens in the guesthouse kitchen with your hosts teaching, and you eat what you've made for dinner that evening.

Is horse riding included, or do I pay extra?

Horse riding is optional and not included in the tour price. You can arrange it separately during the hiking portion on day two if you're interested.
